Gopher Problems? We've Got Solutions.

This number comes from several factors:

• The size of the area where the gopher has been (the larger the area = likely more gophers)
• The amount of holes & dirt mounds visible (most properties with 1-2 mounds experience 1 gopher) *anytime there is 3+ mounds, this usually indicates more than 1 gopher
• The location of the property affects how many gophers appear every year… Is it against open space or large parks with a gopher infestation? Do the neighbors have gophers? Is the neighborhood infested with gophers?

These 3 factors help identify the severity of the gopher problem & can also give insight to how the property will behave in the future when it comes to gopher problems. Remember if the property sits up against a vacant hillside or vacant lot with gopher problems, the threat of a gopher increases dramatically.

A home can experience 1-2 gophers per year, with some properties requiring much more maintenance. A property located in the hills up against nature can have a gopher every month. All properties behave differently depending on a few factors. One of the other main factors that leads to these flare ups is the breeding seasons. (Gophers breed up to 3x a year)

• home natural remedies
• gopher repellent from your local DIY
• wire mesh to put underneath your lawn

All of this has clearly worked for some. However, what I have found while working in the field reflects a different story. Many of the clients I have helped over the years have tried those listed above to no avail & all the while making gopher matters much worse.

The only way to prevent a gopher infestation is to trap & remove them once they come onto the property***Most properties will always have a threat of a gopher. There is no permanent preventative solution to gophers***

Gophers are strict herbivores that feed primarily on plant roots, tubers (potatoes, yams), bulbs, and various succulents. They are known to consume a wide range of vegetation, including garden vegetables (carrots, kale, lettuce), grasses, shrubs, and small tree bark, often dragging entire plants into their tunnels.

• Spring time (March/April)
• Summer time (July/August)
• Fall time (October/November)

Normal lifespan is from 2-3 years. However, in some cases they can live up to 7 years!

A gopher gets much bigger than a mole. Mole tunnels are the size of a quarter usually. Also moles look completely different than a gopher. But both make tunnels & dirt mounds.

Shrubs: Rosemary, Lavender, Oleander, Rock Rose (Cistus), Butterfly Bush (Buddleja), Pineapple Guava, California Lilac (Ceanothus).

Perennials & Herbs: Society Garlic, Euphorbia, Salvia (Sage), Yarrow, Hellebores, Mint, Catmint, Germander, Iris.

Groundcovers: Prostrate Rosemary, Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), Creeping Yarrow
